Do I need to contribute?

No. You do not need to add any of your own money to receive the CLB. It is a grant, not a matching program.

What is the Canada Learning Bond (CLB)?

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) is a gift from the Government of Canada that gets deposited directly into an Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). The money is issued in two stages:

Stage 1: you’ll get $500 for the first year you qualify²
Stage 2: you’ll get $100 for each additional year you qualify, up until they turn 15²

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) does not require personal contributions to the RESP to be paid; eligible beneficiaries can receive CLB without any deposits.
CLB pays $500 for the first year of eligibility and $100 for each additional year of eligibility until the end of the year the child turns 15, to a maximum of $2,000 per beneficiary.
For the 2025–2026 benefit year, CLB eligibility uses adjusted family net income by family size; for 1–3 children the threshold is ≤ $57,375. Thresholds are indexed and change annually; higher thresholds apply for larger families.
